‘They didn’t think I had signed until January’, Greg Taylor reveals teammate taunt

GREG TAYLOR has revealed that he was the subject of ridicule from his Celtic teammates due to his slow start to life at the Scottish Champions. Despite being signed for a fee in the region of £3m, Taylor found himself behind Boli Bolingoli and Jonny Hayes in the pecking order on the left side of defence.

Speaking to Darvel FC Podcast, Taylor spoke about arriving at the Scottish Champions towards the end of the transfer window.

“There was maybe a wee bit of ongoing interest but nothing materialised until the last few weeks.

“I wanted to go, I was desperate, but it was a nervous few weeks, not ones I would want to relieve, if truth be told.

“I had picked up a wee injury, and it took until the last day of the window, but going to Celtic Park that day with my family was an amazing night.

“I hadn’t really trained properly for two weeks because I had been away with Scotland.

“I which I was quite thankful of that, because the standard there was right at it and it gave me a little bit of a breaking in period.

“I think the first person I saw was Broony, he put me at ease straight away.

“He said ‘how are you doing wee man’ and chatted away. At that point you think ‘I will fit in fine’. You just wanted to get started.

“But I think a few lads have said that they didn’t think I had signed until January!”

Taylor made his debut at home to St Mirren and appeared a competent option but it wasn’t until January that Taylor became a mainstay in the Hoops starting XI. The period following the Winter break saw Celtic drop just two points domestically with a draw at Livingston before Coronavirus forced the Scottish Premiership league to be curtailed.

The ex-Killie youngster believes that Celtic would have gone further ahead of their Glasgow rivals in the table.

“We were 13 points clear, we were in a great run of form. Ideally everyone would have liked to have finished.

“But we were only going to extend, we were playing a different formation scoring a lot of goals and enjoying the way we were playing.”

Taylor will return to training on Thursday as Celtic begin their preparations for 10IAR.
