“This is a manager of the highest calibre,” Michael Stewart on Rodgers Return

Michael Stewart has thrown his weight behind the decision that the Celtic heirarchy made to bring much maligned ex-manager, Brendan Rodgers back to the club for a second spell. The Hoops announced today that the Irishman would indeed be returning to the post he left back in February of 2019 to head back to the Premier League.

Speculation has been rife since Ange Postecoglou left as to who the Celtic Board would turn to to fill the not so insignificant void the Greek-Aussie left behind when he headed for North London. Rodgers name shot straight to the top of bookmakers’ lists as who would be the preferred candidate for the gig when Postecoglou upped sticks for Tottenham.

It was revealed that there was some conversation over who should replace the former Australia head coach, with certain people in the boardroom preferring instead to stick with the City Group connections and go for someone in the mould of Enzo Maresca who has now ironically joined Rodgers’ old club Leicester City as boss.

However, it is undeniable that Brendan Rodgers name and resume was the outstanding candidate on paper – despite the obvious caveats and foibles to his appointment again. Some supporters – including the Green Brigade – are still very unhappy about the way in which he left and that is totally understandable. Even so, all things considered, we are still getting a top-level coach who has been over the course already in this league and at this football club.

There is an opportunity here for Celtic to really kick on and also an opportunity to reconcile any bad blood. Former Hibs and Hearts midfielder and now pundit, Michael Stewart, reckons that Celtic have grabbed themselves a top operator and it once again shows the intent from the club to maintain our stranglehold on the domestic scene whilst making progress in European competition.

Taking to Twitter, he said: “Getting Brendan Rodgers back at Celtic is a huge statement from the club. This is a manager of the highest calibre. No messing about they’ve got the best guy for the job”

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
