Three Teams To Always Back Celtic Against
9 times out of 10 or maybe even 99 times out of 100, Celtic will be the favourites for an Scottish Premiership fixture. That sounds like the biggest brag of all time – with some fan bias mixed in – but it’s actually the truth! Historically speaking, Celtic has an incredible H2H record against every club in the league. It means betting on Celtic to win is normally a good bet – but which teams are the most likely to lose when they come up against the Scottish Champions?
We spent some time on Soccer Base going through the different H2Hs and here are three teams you should always expect Celtic to win against!
Ross County
Celtic and Ross County have only played a total of 42 games and The Bhoys have won 31 of these. Six have been drawn and County only managed five wins in the history of this matchup. Visit any of the non GamStop bookmakers on CasinoGam.uk and they will all favour Celtic heavily in the matches this coming season. Whether it’s a league or cup game, the chances are Celtic will win – and win well.
But let’s dig a bit deeper into the results to show you how unlikely it is for Ross County to win either home or away. Celtic have won the last 13 matches in a row across all competitions. The game County did win was a League Cup match where Celtic played a second-string team. You have to go all the way back to 2013 for the last time Ross County beat Celtic in the Scottish Premiership. It was a 3-2 defeat for The Bhoys on that occasion away from home – they’ve never lost to Ross County at home in the league!
In other words, if you bet on Celtic to win and your bet doesn’t come through, you’re one of the unluckiest Hoops fans of all time!
St Mirren
Brendan Rodgers’ team secured their third successive win of the 2024/25 season with a confident 3-0 win over St Mirren at the end of August. It was the latest in a long line of wins against a side who probably wish they never had to play Celtic again.
Unlike Ross County, St Mirren has had the pleasure of facing The Bhoys well over a hundred times – in fact, the full total is 303 games! And would you believe that of these 303 games, St Mirren has won only 42 of them? It’s staggering to think of how dominant Celtic has been in this fixture and the teams met five times in 2023/24 with the scores looking like this:
- Celtic 3 – 2 St Mirren
- Celtic 3 – 0 St Mirren
- St Mirren 0 – 2 Celtic
- St Mirren 0 – 3 Celtic
- Celtic 2 – 1 St Mirren
Add the one from this season to the mix and that’s seven wins in a row. Nowhere near as many as against Ross County, but the last match they didn’t win was a 2-2 draw in 2023. Before that, Celtic won the three previous games 5-1, 5-1 and 4-0. St Mirren secured a rare victory in 2022 but they repeatedly lose by four or more goals when the sides square up.
St Mirren victories are extremely rare in this fixture and that’s why we’d feel confident betting in favour of Celtic when the two play again. To be honest, a punt on Celtic to win by two or more goals feels like a great shout at this rate too!
Dundee
Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve always seen Dundee as an historical side in Scottish football. They were founded in 1893 and that means we’ve come up against them a fair few times over the decades. We’re not quite at the same heights as our St Mirren H2H as we’ve only played Dundee 289 times.
Regardless, our hit rate is just as impressive: 183 wins, 55 draws and only 51 losses.
Wanna know a few crazy facts about our dominance over Dundee in recent history? This old Scottish team saw its golden age in the 1960s and was relatively good in the 40s after the war – as well as performing admirably in the club’s early years. Out of the 51 wins against us, 30 of them came before 1985. This means they’ve only won around 20 games against Celtic in the last 40 years!!
Even crazier than this; they’ve only ever beaten us in back-to-back matches ONCE since 1893 – and that was in…drumroll please…1909.
Jumping back to the present, the stats aren’t much better for poor old Dundee:
- Celtic has won the last 10 matches in a row
- Of those 10 wins, we’ve only scored less than 3 goals twice
- We’ve beaten Dundee 7-1, 6-0 and 5-0 in the last 3 seasons they’ve been in the SPL
- Dundee’s last win came in 1989 and there were only 12 draws between now and then too!!
It’s just sheer dominance and Dundee clearly has a mental block against us. If they win the next match, then I’ll eat an entire Celtic football kit for lunch.
Celtic’s Biggest Bogey Teams
You’ve seen the three teams to always back Celtic against, but are there any Scottish Premiership rivals to be wary of? It’s not overly surprising to learn that we have a positive H2H against every team in the League, apart from theRangers group of clubs.
Incredibly Celtic and the combined ‘Rangers’ clubs (pre and post liquidation of Rangers FC) were tied for wins at 169 apiece with 103 draws thrown in for good measure. The wild thing about that is that Celtic won five of the previous six Glasgow Derby games too – so you’d think we’d be a fair bet against them nowadays. And that was the situation going into the first Glasgow Derby at the start of this month and – surprise, surprise – Celtic won again this time 3-0. That means Celtic have 170 wins while the combined Rangers clubs total is 169.
And then there’s Hearts. We lost twice against them in 2023/24 – in a row as well – and they always provide a tricky contest. If you’re thinking of betting on us to win a game, it’s probably best to avoid either of these two opponents. Or maybe not when you look at the disarray that both are in this season. Hearts have just one point in the league this season and have lost five on the bounce, resulting in Steven Naismith getting sacked at the weekend. And theRangers are in a right mess, not even having their own stadium fully opened for the season as we approach October. They missed out on the Champions League and are already five points behind Celtic and Aberdeen.
For virtually guaranteed wins, pick Ross County, St Mirren or Dundee – Celtic almost always beat them and such is the dominance of Celtic in the Scottish Premiership in recent times – 12 titles wins from 13 – there also plenty of reasons to believe that both Hearts and theRangers can be put to the sword by the Hoops, as indeed has already happened this season.
As mentioned above, Celtic defeated theRangers 3-0 and followed that up with a 2-0 win over Hearts. Impressive stuff from Scotland’s dominant football force.
