With Arsenal, Tottenham and Fiorentina all in the chase to sign FC Basel striker Arthur Cabral, it appears, should the striker leave, the Swiss side have targeted Albian Ajeti for a homecoming to replace their outgoing star, that’s according to a Daily Record report today.
Ajeti really has struggled to settle or impress at Celtic and he’s certainly been given plenty of opportunities with seventeen appearances this season but only three goals to show for his efforts.
Ajeti did look sharp in his last match as he started the Europa League dead rubber 3-2 win over Betis, however the striker’s dreadful luck continued to plague him again, and he left the field having suffered what looked a serious hamstring injury and hasn’t been fit enough to play his part since.
The Celtic striker previously played for FC Basel prior to signing for West Ham, however the move to the East London club didn’t work out and 18 months ago former Celtic player and West Ham manager Davie Moyes sold him to Neil Lennon’s Celtic for a fee of £4.5m, and if things didn’t work out at West Ham, they haven’t been much better at Celtic either.
As such, if it is possible for Celtic and FC Basel to come to an arrangement that would allow the striker to return to Switzerland, then this could be an ideal solution for both parties, as Basel will require a replacement for Arthur Cabal, Celtic will want the player off the wage bill and surely Albian Ajeti would jump at the chance of a return to the club where he made his name.
It will take the transfer pieces to fall into place but this could be one worth keeping an eye on.
