According to a report in German publication BILD, Celtic are in a three-day race for Austrian international, Hannes Wolf. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder is said to be surplus to requirements at Borussia Monchengladbach under Max Eberl and is one of six the club will be listening to offers for.
The report comes via Fussball Transfers who cite that BILD have confirmed Celtic are competing with Turkish side Trabzonspor and Austrian cracks, Rapid Vienna for the playmaker’s signature. Mochengladbach are facing an exodus of the playing staff as several first team stars look to be on the move.
Wolf only just moved to the North Rhine-Westphalia club recently for a fee believed to be in the region of £8 million, with the potential to rise to £11 million if successful. Wolf came from RB Leipzig in Germany to Mochengladbach in a domestic deal, having previously played for another Red Bull franchise in his homeland, RB Salzburg.
The young Austrian has an abundance of talent, with plenty of scope for resale value. If Celtic could pull off a deal for the attacker it would be some coup considering the potential readily available to be coached. Undoubtedly, Wolf has the attributes to become another major talent within the European game.
With David Turnbull now injured for some time, the need for an attacking midfielder is even more crucial. We lost Ryan Christie in the summer which put even more pressure on Turnbull and Rogic to perform consistently every week and it has subsequently taken it’s toll on both. Rogic suffered a hamstring injury at Easter Road back in November and Turnbull succumbed to the same fate half-an-hour into the League Cup Final in 19 December – ruling him out for two whole months.
The addition of Wolf would be an incredible bit of business for Ange Postecoglou and Celtic. At still just 22-years-old and with a transfer fee that falls within our remit, we could be looking at signing a vital piece of the Ange jigsaw if the veracity of this deal is sound.
