Transfer Latest – Stephen Welsh linked with Croatian side Hajduk Split

Stephen Welsh is once again the subject of transfer speculation this time linking him with a January move to Croatian side Hajduk Split. The Celtic academy graduate was linked to a move to Italy in the summer but that came to nothing and the player continued as part of Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Welsh was last seen in the a Hoops shirt over in Australia where he sustained a head-knock. He then picked up an injury in the winter training week over in the Algarve that the manager reckoned would keep him out for around three weeks.

On that timeframe Welsh should be ready to return anytime soon but with Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt resuming their usual places in the Celtic starting eleven with Moritz Jenz and new signing Yuki Kobayashi currently occupying the central defence cover on the bench, it is going to be an uphill battle for Welsh to force his way back into the Celtic side.

A possible solution could be a move away from Celtic although that is a prospect that Celtic supporting Welsh is unlikely to relish. However the Scotsman’s report today clearly links the former Scotland Under 21s captain with Hajduk Split. The Scotsman reports:

‘The Scotsman has learned that Croatian outfit Hajduk Split are monitoring Stephen Welsh’s situation at Celtic. The 22-year-old centre-half has found game-time limited under Ange Postecoglou this season and faces stiff competition against regular pairing Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt, as well as Moritz Jenz and recent acquisition Yuki Kobayashi.

‘Welsh has also been linked with a move to Udinese, although the Italians are understood to be more keen on brokering a deal for Hibs’ Ryan Porteous, whose contract expires in the summer. Celtic would command a sizeable fee for Welsh as he tied to the club until 2025.’
