Throughout most of last week, Roy Keane was the favourite to be named Celtic’s next permanent manger and some companies suspended betting on the Irishman. Towards the end of the week, speculation cooled somewhat and we began to hear rumours that the board were split over the position. Whether or not there’s any truth in that suggestion remains to be seen.
This week, the bookmakers have shaken things up again as John Kennedy and Eddie Howe have overtaken Roy Keane in the betting race for the vacant managerial position.
Former Bournemouth boss Howe is currently priced at 8/11 and interim Celtic manager Kennedy is priced at 11/4. Meanwhile, Keane has swapped figures from 1/4 to 4/1.
In all likelihood, the shuffle in odds suggests that the bookies know very little about the discussions at Celtic Park and are reacting to the behaviour of punters. Though a wise business move, it probably doesn’t give us much insight.
All three names will not go away when it comes to discussing the Celtic job. Howe has touted as a replacement for Neil Lennon even prior to his departure. Whereas Kennedy and Keane have been mentioned ever since the position became up for grabs. Unless the board privately have a left field name in mind, then it is likely that one of the above trio will become the new boss. That’s about as much as can be deduced at this stage.
