Moussa Dembele was a thorn in the side of Glasgow’s newest professional team. He began life in the derby fixture with a hat-trick at Celtic Park in a 5-1 victory. Then, on 31 December 2016, he ensured it was a dreary New Year’s Eve for the teddy bears once more.
That second derby of the Invincible season, resulted in Celtic going 19 points ahead of the Govan club at the top of the league. The day started so well for the hosts, Kenny Miller putting them ahead inside 12 minutes. However, Dembele lashed home the equaliser before the break and Scott Sinclair sealed the victory with a goal from close range in the second half.
The Bhoys went on to win the league at a canter, securing an Invincible Treble to boot. That accomplishment was the first of two trebles which Dembele won in Glasgow, before moving to French giants Lyon.
Though the striker has gone on to play in the latter stages of the Champions League and win a La Liga title with Atletico Madrid, he has always maintained an affection for the Hoops.
Today, Dembele retweeted a video containing highlights from the 2-1 victory at Ibrox, on this day five years ago. He wrote a caption, which celebrated the day and joked about his sensational time wasting in the corner flag towards the end of the footage!
“Unbeatable, Unstoppable, Uncatchable!” the Frenchman proclaimed. He continued by commenting that it was a “great memory” and remarked: “I should have taken the corner flag with me at the end of the game btw.”
