If there were no goals from Celtic Park on Saturday then that changed yesterday afternoon when Celtic FC Women travelled across the city to Murray Park to play theRangers in the Quarter Final of the SWPL Cup. Fran Alonso was looking to extend his perfect record against theRangers having won all three previous encounters.
theRangers, currently two points clear of both current Champions Glasgow City and Celtic in the SWPL, went into this Cup tie as favourites but as we pointed out pre-match Charlies Wellings was likely to find the back of the net if given a sniff at theRangers goals.
And that is exactly have it turned out. The BBC reckoned that theRangers dominated the first half they would say that wouldn’t they – I must have been watching a different game. And one Celtic fan media site (unnamed to spare blushes) described the winning Celtic goal as follows: “The English striker pounced upon a mistake by Rangers goalkeeper Jenna Fife and hit an unstoppable strike into the back of the net.” A quite remarkable summary of this goal, perhaps I was watching a different game! Or maybe I was actually watching!
How would you describe the winner from Charlie Wellings after watching the Unique Angle video?
Incidentally theRangers keeper was distraught at the final whistle, absolutely greetin’ her eyes out!
The two sides meet again at the Penny Cars Stadium over at Airdrie on Sunday afternoon and this is a chance for Celtic fans to come along and roar Fran Alonso’s fine Celtic side onto another win that will see us go ahead of theRangers in the league. You fancy coming along? Green Brigade? The Bhoys? The Celtic Supporters Association? The Affiliation? The local Celts in North Lanarkshire? What are you all doing on later on Sunday afternoon after watching the Dundee game?
Kick-off is at 4.10pm this coming Sunday, 7 November. Tickets via the official Celtic website.

Well done lhadies and ghirls,Fran and his assistants. One glaring point in the women’s football seems to be the marked absence of ‘honest mistakes’ by the refs and their linesmen…..very refreshing….
