We were all prepared and almost expectant of some problems with the Lazio support tonight. The club has a big history of support for fascism among fans and players so this almost doesn’t come as a big surprise.
Fans from both clubs in Rome have a history of being unpleasant so hopefully this won’t result in trouble between fans at the game.
Footage has emerged of Lazio fans marching through Glasgow doing fascist/Nazi salutes before tonight’s game:
The most obvious link between the two clubs is the legendary Paolo Di Canio who also has some history with this kind of thing. An article in The Telegraph a few years ago picked up some comments from Di Canio when he claimed he was a fascist but not a racist.
It’s no surprise that when they have players who behave in that way, the fans will follow suit. Hopefully they aren’t in such high spirits after the game. It promises to be a tough game, but there’s nothing in the Lazio starting XI to be completely scared of.
A win would be a huge step towards the knockout rounds.
