Video – Bobby Madden Has A Shocker As St Mirren Hold Celtic

Celtic were champions elect by the time they headed to New St Mirren Park on this day in 2013.

The Hoops burst in front in the sixth minute thanks to a wonderful header from Kris Commons who dispatched of Efe Ambrose’s delivery. Commons then spurned a great chance to grab his second of the afternoon, which Celtic almost paid for when St Mirren had a corner that was cleared off the line by Beram Kayal.

The hosts did have the ball in the net a short while later, but Dummet was correctly adjudged to have fouled Fraser Forster in the Celtic goal. It was one of very few correct decisions in terms of the major calls that day.

St Mirren pressed for an equaliser again and swung in another corner. This time the ball sailed over the back post and clearly struck Samaras on the arm, but no penalty was awarded to the Buddies.

The second half began with another officiating stinker. The ball broke loose in midfield. Paul McGowan nipped in ahead of Wanyama and the Kenyan caught him late with a half hearted tackle as he attempted to withdraw. It was arguably a booking, yet Madden reached for his red card and sent the number 67 off!

Late in the match the biggest flashpoint occurred. Izzaguirre headed a dangerous cross out to the edge of the Celtic box, where Anthony Stokes was on hand to collect. The Irishman hooked the ball beyond the attacker, who clearly took him out, yet the referee waved play on. Goncalves picked up possession at the edge of the box and dived. Footage clearly showed that no contact was made with the player and nor was the incident inside the penalty area, yet Madden compounded his dreadful afternoon by awarding a spot kick. Paul McGowan converted and Celtic were held to a draw.
