On this day in 1966 Celtic thumped Dynamo Kiev 3-0 in the first leg of the European Cup Winner’s Cup Quarter-Final.

The game was the scene of a famous moment when a 16 year old George Connelly circulated the field of play doing keepy ups to entertain the crowd. He rounded the field without dropping the ball and got a great reception from the fans.

64,000 people turned up, the largest crowd at Paradise that season. They were treated to Tommy Gemmell putting Celtic ahead from long range before Bobby Murdoch added a second and third in the second half. The victory was Celtic’s 24th successive match without defeat.

Things could have got even better, as John Hughes missed a penalty, but it mattered little as Celtic got a draw in the USSR to take themselves through to the Semi-Final against Liverpool.

Celtic’s line up that night was: Simpson; Craig, Gemmell; Murdoch, Cushley (replacing the injured McNeill), Clark; Johnstone, Gallacher, McBride, Chalmers, Hughes.
