Video: Chris Sutton not surprised at Celtic’s League Cup defeat

Chris Sutton has insisted that Celtic’s shock League Cup defeat at the hands of Derek McInnes and his Kilmarnock side wasn’t all that surprising for him. The former Hoops favourite was giving his thoughts on the result via the ‘It’s All Kicking Off’ podcast and didn’t hold back in his assessment of the current squad.

It’s been a very slow summer transfer window for the Celtic supporters in terms of the experience and quality we all assumed would be added to solidify our place at the top of the tree domestically, whilst also trying to make some kind of impact in the UEFA Champions League group stages.

So far, it has been bitterly disappointing in that respect, with us having lost Jota for a record-breaking transfer deal and Carl Starfelt leaving to be closer to his family in La Liga with Celta Vigo. Likewise, Aaron Mooy’s subsequent retirement is another that has left a considerable hole in our squad with his quality and experience being really valuable at points last year.

Sutton says that his old club are distinctively weaker than last campaign and that Brendan Rodgers will have to sort this mess out or he worries for them this coming year. With one trophy already lost in the defence of our Treble, Chris reckons that the pressure is now on. Have a listen to the Englishman give his thoughts on Celtic below…

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
