Video – Green Brigade Rename Glasgow Streets As The Group Raise Awareness Amid Black Lives Matter Campaign

There has been a lot of criticism over the way in which the Black Lives Matter movement has conducted itself. Peaceful protest is the way forward rather than rioting, which shifts focus onto such behaviour as opposed the issue at hand.

As an anti-racist, anti-fascist, left wing and Irish Republican group, the Green Brigade Ultras have always been at the fore in terms of social and political campaigning. Whether it’s bringing attention to the situation in Palestine and raising £200,000 for a Palestinian medical centre, collecting thousands of pounds for local communities and providing PPE during the coronavirus pandemic, breaking the UK record foodbank collection several years in a row, highlighting the plight of asylum seekers, or campaigning against racism – the Green Brigade and Celtic support are there.

Together, Celtic supporters do more to make a difference and to uphold their club’s values than any other. The Green Brigade are at the forefront of that.

Now the ultras group’s latest action has been to highlight the fact that Glasgow was built on the back of slavery. In a video uploaded to the North Curve Twitter page, Green Brigade members can be seen replacing street signs bearing the names of those who exploited the slave trade, with civil rights activists.

The video is accompanied by the hashtags – #slavesmadeglasgow and #blacklivesmatter

It’s a powerful, educational production, which spreads the message in a peaceful manner.

You can watch the video below.

Meanwhile, the group displayed these banners to further highlight the issue and to get people thinking. Education is the key to overcoming ignorance.
