On this day in the summer of 2019, Celtic faced AIK Stockholm at Celtic Park in the first leg of the Europa League qualifiers.
This game actually marked the first competitive meeting between these two clubs. Aik Stockholm’s last encounter with a Scottish club was back in the 1984/85 season where they lost on aggregate 3-1 to Dundee United. Unfortunately, the Hoops had just dropped down from the Champions League qualifiers so had to compete in the Europa League instead. The last time the Hoops failed to reach a major European tournament was in the 2010/11 season.
Goals from James Forrest and Odsonne Edouard saw Celtic sail past Stockholm in a 2-0 victory. Celtic’s starting lineup was: Gordon, Ajer, Jullien, Simunovic, Bolingoli-Mbombo, Forrest, Brown, McGregor, Christie, Edouard, and Johnston.
