Celtic FC this afternoon published this video on their You Tube channel featuring Interim manager John Kennedy and club captain Scott Brown, who combine to explain why Celtic are participating in a football wide boycott of social media this weekend.
The message from Celtic FC is essentially this:
“Today we make a stand. Let’s make social media a safe and welcoming place for everyone, echoing our core values of kindness, community, respect and togetherness. We are CelticOne Club since 188. Always have been – always will be – a club open to all.”
Whether this boycott will make any difference is debatable. It’s unlikely to make much difference to the trolls and the haters, the racists and the bigots who cause these problems. What it might do though is see a drop in traffic on the social media sites and that in itself might bring these international media giants to the negotiating table to do more to ban or suspend offending accounts and to insist on full details being supplied and being available to anyone who is abused on social media so that legal action could follow.
