On this day in 1975, Celtic drew 2-2 with Rangers at Hampden in the Glasgow Cup final. The replay was never played!
Tickets for the match cost just £1 including VAT and the game attracted 70,000 fans due to the torrential rain, despite 82,000 tickets being sold.
Paul Wilson put Celtic ahead in 3 minutes after a dreadful error by Sandy Jardine. However, his second goal was outstanding as he beat three defenders before firing into the net.
Wilson’s goals meant he held the unique record of scoring in four cup finals at Hampden that season – Drybrough Cup, League Cup, Scottish Cup and Glasgow Cup. Paul Wilson always seemed to raise his game when playing against Rangers, perhaps that was something to do with the sickening racist abuse that he face in these Old Firm matches. The best way to shut them up was to put the ball in the back of the net.
The Celtic team was Latchford, McGrain, Lynch, McCluskey, MacDonald, Brogan, Hood, Murray, Dalglish, Lennox, Wilson.
The replay was set for 2 August but never went ahead.
