On this week in 2003, Celtic beat Livingston 2-0. The goals on that away trip were scored by Chris Sutton and Alan Thompson, both were fine examples of exquisite technical play.

The first half had been tight, the teams going into the break at 0-0. Therefore, a bit of magic would be needed for Celtic to break through a resolute defence. Up step Sutton and Tommo.

On 48 minutes, Alan Thompson chipped the ball into Chris Sutton, who, while holding off his marker, controlled the ball on the half volley in such a way that he could turn his opponent and score with a simple finish. It was textbook football, where first touch and strength were concerned.

Having been provider, it was soon Thompson’s turn to find the net. With five minutes to go, the Englishman made sure of the points when he dispatched a volley from the edge of the box following a clearance from Neil Lennon’s cross. Like his compatriot earlier in the game, Tommo showcased tremendous technique as the struck the ball with venom but kept it low and arrowed towards the bottom corner.
