Celtic Football Club was founded by a number of Irish immigrants, and the children of Irish immigrants (apart from one founding father), primarily for the Glasgow Irish community who made up the vast majority of parishioners within the missions of St Mary’s (Calton), St Michael’s (Parkhead) and Sacred Heart (Bridgeton).
That the club is proud of those roots and continues to draw support from Scotland’s multi generational Irish community, the global Irish diaspora and many within Ireland itself is something which upsets a lot of people in sections of Scottish society.
But just like the Green Brigade said in reference to their position on the use of pyrotechnics, Scotland’s Irish communities and the expression of their culture ‘isn’t going away you know’.
This video shows a celebration of those roots and many supporter’s identity. While it obviously goes without saying that this is not an exclusivist expression as the club also draws support from a variety of people.
