On this day in 1988, Celtic overcame a 1-0 first leg deficit in the opening round of the European Cup, by thumping Honved 4-0 at Paradise.

The game wasn’t straightforward though, as despite an early goal from Billy Stark, the Bhoys walked a tightrope until 73 minutes when goals from Andy Walker, Frank McAvennie and Mark McGhee saw Celtic burst into the second round.

Just over 40,000 were at the game, snapping up tickets for as little as £3. Alan Rough made an impressive European debut, facing the same opposition that he played against for Partick Thistle in the 1971 UEFA Cup.

So important was this match in setting the tone for the season, that Celtic went to Seamill 24 hours earlier than usual, to prepare.
