Was it right for Celtic to ban the BBC?

Was it right for Celtic to ban BBC Scotland from yesterday’s media conference and managerial unveiling at Celtic Park?

A few eyebrows were raised when it was revealed that Celtic had banned the BBC from the Brendan Rodgers’ big day back at Paradise. I must admit I was a bit surprised and had to dig around to find out it was on the back of an article by beeb reporter Tom English.

Uncle Tom is fond of a anti-Celtic rant now and again (basically because up until now it’s been a free hit for him and he loves to court favour with the hordes across the city) so his attack comes of no surprise. I had a read of said article and his agenda is plain to see before your very eyes.

According to Tom, Brendan will face a tougher challenge as theRangers are a stronger side. Maybe, but stronger? Two major trophies since Rodgers was last here doesn’t make them a bigger threat. St Johnstone have won the same since Brendan left, does that make them a bigger challenge?

He also scrutinised Brendan’s European record and wasn’t kind in his assessment. Although he has a point as his European record is something Celtic needs to improve on, but Brendan’s not got the worst record. Far from it.

He finished his piece by saying that for a man who has done a lot, Brendan has a lot to prove. Really Tom? A proper Invincible Treble? A double treble? Seven trophies from seven in total during his last reign?

Did he write that stuff when Walter Smith returned to Rangers in 2007? After all, first time around he faced a much weaker Celtic but his success was never diminished by Tom English or anyone else at the BBC, far from it. Did English lambast Mick Beale when the former assistant returned to the number one position for having won just one of nine trophies in his first stint at Ibrox as a coach? No, did he heck.

Call it bias or fishing, or whatever you want, that English article is like the man himself, clueless and misinformed. Does that article warrant a ban for the Beeb? Maybe, but some will say it has a bit of pettiness about it, just like the other mob across the city, who do it on a regular basis. We’re better than that. Or maybe the club have just had enough of cheap shots from the media. It is within their rights to ban them after all.

Let’s hear your thoughts on this…

  1. Yes it’s about time Celtic grew a pair, for too long SMSM have had a dig at us without any recourse from our board. You look at the statement put out by the BBC regarding there employees being unbiased when everyone is either a exrangers player or rangers supporter,so excellent we don’t need the BBC at all,use our own forms of communication.Where the truth will be told

    • Long overdue as the BBC has become nothing more than a Sevco Fanzine, they’ll publish any rubbish that comes out the Ibrox PR department without any analysis or proper prespective.
The whole of the SMSM acted over the last 3 months as Sevco’s Season Ticket promoters , they turned a terrible season for them into one which you would think Sevco won the treble, no other media in Europe does stuff like this and the BBC are party to it.
Would you invite Heart and Hand to Celtic pressers, there’s no real difference between then and the BBC, you’re never going to get an unbiased question set or unbiased report and from what is a national, state operated, independent broadcaster, that’s a disgrace.

    • William Melvin on

I totally agree with these bans and while they are at it they can add the rest of the pro Sevco media.
Celtic do not need any of these organisations to get their information out to the public who are interested in them.
They can publish everything on the club website and their twitter account.
I read last week that a tweet from the club’s account had more than 5 million hits,do the math !
Only when these hun supporting outlets realise we are not there to be pilloried ad infinitum because we will bite back will they even attempt to have a more balanced approach.
      Fuck the lot of them.

      • No wonder the Celtic View used to be nicknamed Pravda . I’m just reading the guff from most on here . Freedom of the press isn’t only if you happen to like what they say. It’s embarrassing for a club who like to take the moral high ground.

        • The “Freedom of the Press” is an empty slogan that means the opposite in this country. The “Press” will never be free until it is released from the shackles of big business and self centred owners.

  2. Allaboutceltic on

Of course it’s right and not before long.

If I called you a useless cunt on here, would you publish it??😂

    • The thing is English was correct about everything he said . That’s whether you happen to like it or not. You support a different Celtic to me pal. The Celtic View used to print the most awful rubbish imaginable . They should look in before they start looking out.

  3. Ex players EBT recipients/cheats and our tax money pays for these clowns on the radio and sportscene. Should have barred them long ago with the DR and the hun. Don’t read/listen/watch any of them due to their bias

  4. Embarrassing from the club… the article was absolutely fine and far tamer than the sentiments of many celtic fans.

  5. 100% correct, it goes deeper with the BBC who I find very anti,-Celtic, and while this ban is in place Celtic should let the BBC know about a lot more than just T English there whole set up should be discussed

    • When Sevco banned BBC plenty Celtic fans thought it was petty. I’d like to think we are bigger than that. A lot of the criticism pundits get is for saying the same as many Celtic fans say.

  6. 100% correct. BBC supposed to be British Broadcasting NOT Billy Boys which it currently is. The whole football and football media side in Scotland is ante Celtic. Should have done it years ago.

  7. Hardly banned over one article.

Pat Bonnar struggles to speak on the radio, partly coz he’s getting it in his ear what way the narrative is to go.
Then add in all the EBT’ers deliberately employed to assist with their tax demands , if they ever get them.
The lassie Crichton now comes across as a blue nose. And the mad thing is R Foster seems fair, by comparison to others….

A wake up call to others, or Celtic take them to court.

If everyone stopped buying their TV license the BBC would disappear. Don’t give the people who hate us and do us down at every opportunity our money. The BBC have an anti Celtic agenda. Don’t pay them to bad mouth us.

  9. The BBC are a nest of Ibrox vipers that will only condescend to Celtic when the Rangers are winning cos that’s the way they like it. If its Celtic winning everything then they portray it as ‘disturbing’ for Scottish football. The bbc narrative is as transparent as a Rangers share – worthless and misleading.
I support the ban on the bbc as well as a ban on a few other anti-Celtic media outlets – eg Rectum and SHun.

  10. Lawrie Crapenberg on

Was it right to ban the Tory controlled BBC and its BBC Tartan sports section full of EBT recipients and former players of Liquidated Rangers as well as Sevco The Rangers ? Damn right it was.

I’m sick of BBC lies about Continuity Rangers* (and they know they are lying) and there gimp expression of oLD fIRM (which they use at every opportunity despite the LIQUIDATION of Rangers. Johnson Lied, the BBC lie.

Scrap the BBC and the sinister tax on simply owning a TV.

Well done Celtic – we don’t need, want or miss the TORYBBC.

  11. Wrong. I criticised huns for banning players and media, ergo, Celtic were no better than them, and that pains me to say that. The press have a right to print what they think is right, even if it is totally biased towards another club. The only way to prove them wrong is to be successful, NOT to throw a hissy fit when you don’t like something they print.

    • Yep, we are no better than them ,and ,in some ways we are worse because we like to think we always occupy the moral high ground. What a joke that is.

  12. martin leadbetter on

Banning any media outlet is never a good idea and not a great look. BBC Scotland’s coverage is rotten and , Michael Stewart apart the ‘pundits’ are rotten – failed managers, cheats and never were managers. Kenny Miller ffs ! Hysterical “open all mikes ” nonsense and dinosaurs like Young, Millar and, sorry, Bonnar.
But the Record & Clyde are as bad or worse – some of the views expressed here are pretty wild too ! Free speech is vital in all areas and we should not be doing this.
