“We hope to close out the market in a really positive way,” Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers was giving very little away regarding Deadline Day transfer business when speaking to Sky Sports this afternoon ahead of his media conference at Lennoxtown…

The Celtic manager didn’t want to be drawn on either Arne Engels, Or Auston Trusty, or indirectly Luke McCowan (when quizzed about homegrown players) but did say that Celtic has a number of transactions going on behind the scenes.

Earlier today the Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder admitted that Auston Trusty was on the verge of signing for Celtic.

Whether the arrivals are restricted to the two we already know about we don’t know, and Brendan also suggested that a few players could be going out on loan before the window closes, with the speculation earlier today suggesting that Tomoki Iwata and Maik Nawrocki are the likely leavers.

“We hope to close out the market in a really positive way. We always said we wanted to finish today stronger than we entered into it, and I’m very positive we can do that,” Brendan told Sky Sports.

When asked about the imminent arrival of Arne Engels, Brendan simply refused to talk about a player ahead of any deal being formalised. He said: “There are a number of things we’re looking at. Hopefully we can do that. I never want to the speak while the process is in place but we have a number of transactions going on behind the scenes and hopefully by the this evening we can be in a really good place and have the strength that we want.” Which is fair enough.

When asked about Celtic being about to break the club’s transfer record fee the manager had this to say: “What we want to keep doing is keep progressing. If we can sign someone who is a regular young player in the Bundesliga along with the other players we want to sign, that’s the support the team needs. The supporters will be really happy bringing in the level of players that we can. The team deserve good players to come in and challenge them.”

So very little confirmation, no names being mentioned, but no denials either. Doubt we’ll get much more from Brendan’s media conference other than team news and thoughts on the game against theRangers on Sunday. We’ll find out what’s the story with Cameron Carter-Vickers who was reported to be missing at training this morning. The hacks get a fifteen minute slot to watch training most weeks, although the Celtic fan media don’t for some reason. No idea why.

  1. A bit surprised that we have missed out on Ben doak as a potential replacement for Mikey Johnston within our squad?
Doak heading to Middlesbrough, thought we could have offered a better opportunity this season imo?
