Celtic has been repeatedly linked with Dundee midfielder Luke McCowan, a player who’s impressed on the domestic front the last twelve months or so…
It’s been widely reported that Hibs are interested in the former Ayr United player, but have struggled to meet Dundee’s valuation which is believed to be around the £1 million mark. Hibs yesterday tried again to sign McCowan with a bid of £750,000 but that is unlikely to be accepted.
According to several sources Celtic have been credited with an interest in McCowan and would have no trouble meeting Dundee’s financial requirements for the deal to proceed. It is believed that the player himself is a life-long Celtic supporter so he may have a big say in where he plays his football come September.
McCowan is Dundee’s captain and has caught the attention of several sides scoring nine goals and provided five assists last season as the Dens Park side club clinched a place in the top six. He’s started this season just as impressively scoring three goals and registering three assists in just six games in all competitions.
McCowan is a dynamic midfielder who is tidy on the ball, and as well as scoring and assisting goals he’s a committed player who gives his all for his side. He’s very much a Brendan Rodgers type of player, and therefore it wouldn’t come as a surprise if the Irishman was monitoring his current situation.

The question is though, would a player such as McCowan enhance this Celtic side? For me he would be a squad player, but a handy one at that. He’d be very useful in the domestic matches around the incredibly intense Champions League schedule and for instance could allow Callum McGregor to sit out numerous Scottish Premiership matches to focus on European football.
He’s Scottish which would help with the ‘homegrown’ quota required for European competition, and more importantly he’s got plenty of ability. He’s maybe not on the same level as our current midfielders, but with plenty of football to be played next season, a player like Luke McCowan could make an important contribution.

Time will tell if this deal will happen. If it does it’s a signing that might remind you of Brendan bringing in Jonny Hayes from Aberdeen after his first season in charge of Celtic.
And McCowan could be joined by his former Dundee teammate Owen Beck who impressed in two loan spells at Dundee last season and clearly caught the Celtic manager’s eye. Liverpool are looking for £3m for their Academy left-back while Celtic is not quite at that valuation, chipping away at the price.
