Why the need to bring Celtic into every player linked with theRangers?

Celtic were yesterday linked with Leeds United youngster Joe Gelhardt. Whether there is any truth in the matter is anyone’s guess, but ironically and not for the first time the player in question has also been linked with a move to theRangers.

This has become quite a common theme, not just recently, but many times in the past.

There was Fabio Silva just recently, who apparently turned down Celtic to sign up at Ibrox. Then we were linked with Scott McKenna, and low and behold, he’s also a target for theRangers.

Why do the media feel the need to bring Celtic into almost every single transfer target of the Ibrox club? I think we all know the answer to that one. The players in question are more than likely Ibrox bound, and Celtic are just thrown into the mix to make it look like we’ve been snubbed, they said no, that old chestnut.

There’s also the click-bait angle as the story will get both sets of supporters reading it, rather than just one lot, if both Celtic and theRangers are mentioned. That suits the media outlets in question.

And finally agents ca also be responsible, as they try to generate interest in a player to get the desired move. Dropping Celtic into any such story can help enormously.

Celtic, for all their lethargic movement in the transfer market, mostly keep their business quiet until it’s a sure thing, but there may be an agent at the other side of the deal who knows that Celtic is interested but attempts to use that inside knowledge to drum up interest elsewhere, or to force through better terms with our club.

There’s also the fact that we have more financial muscle and if we want a player that badly, we will get them. We don’t need to leak false information to the media. That’s just what other pathetic excuses for a football club do.
