CELTIC had done the hard bit at the weekend when a Charlie Nicholas goal in front of 15,000 Hoops Supporters at Ibrox gave Celtic a 1-0. We had to go up to play Dundee Utd on the Wednesday night just to take away the mathematical uncertainty but in essence we celebrated the league win in Govan before heading to the City of Discover a few days later just to make certain.

This was a free flowing wonderfully exciting Celtic side when they were on their game and Dundee Utd were a decent side themselves. The attendance at Tannadice was 15,349 and those of us who were lucky enough to have been there will fondly remember a very special match and THAT winner, scored by Celtic legend Tommy Burns.

And how he enjoyed himself that cold night in Dundee!

The Celtic side was Bonner, McGrain, Reid, MacLeod, McAdam, Aitken, Provan, Conroy, McGarvey, Burns and Nicholas. The substitutes were MacDonald and Doyle.

Murdo got us off to the perfect start in 2 minutes with a looping header past Hamish McAlpine but Pettigrew levelled the scores in 16 minutes. Frank McGarvey’s poacher’s instincts put Celtic back in from on 35 minutes and that’s the way it stayed until the interval.

Into the second half and Tommy scored a very special goal just before the hour mark before Paul Sturrock got Dundee Utd’s second goal on 71 minutes.

The celebrations were extra-special that night.
