Yesterday – Ten random thoughts from a Main Stand season ticket holder

We asked for readers to contribute today, here’s the first submission, with an older supporter from the Main Stand having his say…

YESTERDAY…

I’ve seen it all before – and very much worse. The current Celtic support (probably everyone 30 and under) have not really been living in the real world. All these championships, trebles and THEM being either out of the equation or rank rotten.

Brendan Rodgers applauds the support after yesterday defeat against Hearts

There’s no reason at all to think the ba’s burst because we’ve been a bit rubbish over the past three weeks.

Here are a few random thoughts for The Celtic Star readers this morning…

1. Hearts played really well (if you admire organisation and defence structures).

2. It was ‘after the Lord Mayor’s Show’ syndome following Wednesday’s high.

3. Why are the hard-of-thought complaining only about “The Board” and not Mr Ange for his swift exit without notice?

4. I know members of he board and they’re certainly no’ daft.

5. Ange’s managerial record has a recurring pattern: two successive championships followed by a poorer third season. We’re likely suffering from Ange’s third season syndrome.

6. Two or three players playing regularly seem to me to be less than committed at the moment.
Johnston(s) (hopeless yesterday), Turnbull, for example. (Maybe they don’t like the manager?)

7. Brendan has not really changed the playing formation – he’s just keen to be more careful and less reckless.

8. Kyogo has had virtually no service when he makes his brilliant runs’

9. Take last season’s winners and subtract Juranovich, Giakoumakis, Hatate, Jota, Mooy, Abada, Welsh, Starfelt.

10. Add the age-related decline of Hart and Forrest (and, maybe McGregor) What are we left with?

Yesterday!

PS – The type of players we need to sign simply won’t play in the SPFL – wages and standards.

PPS – When Brendan arrived in May 2016 he was replacing Rooney Deila, a manager who recognised himself that it wasn’t working out for him at Celtic.

In June 2023 he was replacing Ange Postecoglou who was at the peak of his powers. The first time around he was a big step up, this time though he was following on from a hugely successful and popular manager.

But.

We’ll be there!

  1. God, the board love people like the author of this article.

What do you think Sevco would do if they had £70m+ in the bank? They would try to bury us.

What do we do? The bare minimum. Just try and stay a wee bit ahead of the rest.

The financial advantages Celtic enjoys over the rest of the league is not being seen on the park.

We have previously and could again have quality, experienced professionals playing for us if we pay the going rate. We clearly don’t want to do that so we don’t get that type of player.

What we get is a scatter gun approach to transfers with the hope we get occasionally lucky.

This league is in the balance whilst we conduct ourselves in this fashion especially when Sevco don’t have a moron in their dugout.

    Huge January incoming.

    • Spot on!! Utter bs ” players won’t play in spl” They go anywhere if thet money is right!l And playing for a support and club like ours!! In a second!! Tho like the old board used to do these cretins down play our club!! To keep the status quo!! Lawell did this in plain sight!! With the nepotism and jobs for the bhoys!! We should have a brand new main stand also with 72,000 seats ias t’s out club!! Our money!! The stadium could be amazing if symetrical but not can’t be too far ahead of ” Der Hun” Mr Lawell pushed us to far long overdue all this we need rid of Desmond for real change and there we have a major issue

    • Pushed us far too long even! Lawell knew fine well he wasnt wanted back at our! Club time for massive changes tho going be hard moving these chancers on the gravy train! Fergus Built 3 stands in 4 years these shysters with over 70 million in the bank tell us ” we can’t afford to upgrade main stand” when it’s an embarrassment! I am using this topic to show the utter contempt they have for us!! Risk averse employees no self made men appart for Desmond who doesn’t really give a dam let be honest!! We could be miles ahead on every level and be on a par easily with most the 2 tier clubs in Europe easily!! But no no no that won’t go for big Pedro no he leaned his craft off the Kelly’s and the whites alright amazing this guy has ever been allowed at our! Club! He micro managed us to believe the bs !! And many happy clappers bought it! While he lined his pockets in pain sight! Changed needed now!! We should have all joined the trust in the covid season an forced real change!! We need real visionaries at our club not all tired man en line lawell we ho are just employees grossly ov we paid yes! But just yes men for the old Irish chap !! Fergus puts all this chancers to shame!! A disgrace! If this board had been in charge from 94 we have a 40,000 stadium with seats bolted to terraces!! Ala hamdump! They need removed

      • Great point about the main stand. The fact they are not even considering it is madness. We are never going to get big tv money in our league, we have to look at other ways of creating more income, stadium expansion is a no brainer, we could easily put 30 million in as a down payment, and Desmond could easily loan us interest free another 30 million, we could and should easily be doing this. But instead they are talking about spending 25 million on a pointless white elephant for the womans team and a non existent youth. McCann if he was still here in these circumstances would do it.

    • such utter crap !!!! i have been watching celtic from early 60’s…could never afford a season ticket…never new any board members…i don’t think they are daft…they are just self serving ,spineless weasels who have been taking the celtic support for a ride ….the whole place needs gutting out…the lawwells…nicholson desmond et al….who and bring the laziest of lazy appointments, rodgers, with ye…..and don’t come back…
as you so rightly said david g…..the board love apologists like this…

  2. Martin Blackshaw on

I think the Board inspired this article. Never read anything so propagandist on the Board’s behalf. If these are real people then they’re not living in the real world!

  3. Can’t believe you are blaming the manager from last season ??? Is that you writing under your pseudonym Peter ? Get a pen and write down the list of shit players who have come and gone over your tenure. Although, your pockets are bulging with what should have been spent on a football team !!!

  4. 70 million plus in the bank (operating deficiencies on the park), 70 million in the bank (season ticket prices going up). 70 million in the bank (no communication between board and fans, except to bash the green brigade), 70 million in the bank (price of shirts, food in ground going up).

DID PETER LAWELL GHOST WRITE THIS ARTICLE?

    BRING BACK DOM MCKAY!!!!!!!!!

THE BOARD ARE TAKING A 50 MILLION GAMBLE THIS YEAR AND HAVE MADE AN ARSE OF IT.

  5. Agree with all the comments , me and others like me keep saying why don’t we spend the transfer budget on 1 or 2 1st team ready players every year and back them up with players from our youth set up instead of signing the never ending list of project players who are draining the budget year on year and contributing nothing .

    • Agree with most of the points. Twelve or more years of almost total dominance and as soon as we hit a problem the bedwetters appear. Fed up listening to people blaming the board and other easy targets. Kyoto has been poor all season and Hatate in particular has been sorely missed. Get things in perspective! This article tries to do that.

  6. And here we have the reason why , that after 20 years of dereliction of duty by the board, and their love of old firm plc, zero action has been taken for change, and not surprisingly we have had none. Nope just the same old squandering of our advantage at every opportunity, you’d almost think there was some hidden agenda, but it matters not when you have a support full of apologists, all prepared to do nothing, or indeed like this guy, don’t even see anything wrong.

    • Well said Jim ! Couldn’t agree more, especially about the apologists, modern supporters brought up in a manufactured corporate era, but don’t bring politics into it. Why has the working class education system been evaporating for so many years ? Answers on a postcard.
