Celtic fans will be gutted to hear that Gerry & The Pacemakers singer Gerry Marsden has passed away. The ‘Merseybeat’ icon passed away today aged 78 and the club have paid tribute to the singer who sang one of the club’s most iconic anthems – You’ll Never Walk Alone.
The song has been widely associated with Celtic and Liverpool and also became one of the anthems offering hope to many during the Coronavirus pandemic.
Gerry and the Pacemakers were the first ever act to reach number one in the UK charts with their first three single releases in the 1960s when another band from Liverpool would go onto dominate music. However, Gerry and The Pacemakers are best known for their anthem, You’ll Never Walk Alone that is used by Celtic, Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund supporters.
The song is believed to have been sang by Celtic supporters following a 1966 clash against Liverpool and is synonymous with European nights at Celtic Park. When the sides played each other in the UEFA Cup on Celtic’s run to the final in 2003, Marsden sang the anthem in person.
