Having beaten Rangers 6-1 in the semi-final, a Celtic eleven ran out at Ibrox on this day in 1896 day to face Queen’s Park in the final of the Charity Cup.

The team was McArthur, Meechan, Doyle, McEleney, Kelly, Battles, Madden, Blessington, Martin, McMahon and Ferguson.

The match was played on a scorching hot day in Glasgow, the third time that season the teams had met in a cup tie. In the Glasgow Cup, Celtic had beaten the Spiders in the final – also at Ibrox – by 6 goals to 3; whereas, in the Scottish Cup, Queen’s Park won 4-2 in the first round at Celtic Park.

In this match, the score was tied at 1-1 at the end of normal time, so the match went to extra-time, with Celtic notching the winner in the 104th minute. They owed their victory mainly to their very sound defence, the forward line having some injury problems – Jim Blessington lame for most of the match and Johnny Madden playing with a shoulder injury.

Final Score: Celtic 2 Queen’s Park 1
