Neil Lennon has confirmed that he doesn’t understand why supporters are asking for change at the club. Sitting 23 points behind Rangers, out of Europe and the League Cup, supporters haven’t been given the significant added value as the club have lurched from one disaster to another. However, the manager doesn’t see it that way.
Speaking at today’s media conference, Dave from The Cynic asked a brilliant, brave question to the manager – asking whether he could understand the anger and ill-feeling towards the club in what was billed as a season like no other. Instead of the response that the media got from Lennon last week, the Irishman said that the fans were wrong to comment on the running of the club.
Lennon’s points on the success in recent seasons enforce how ludicrous his comments are. Celtic went from being the sole dominant force in Scotland but rolling back spending and quality of management has opened the door for Rangers to climb back into contention.
Lennon will always be synonymous with the club, his successes as a player and a manager will always be there for all to see. However, he is harming the goodwill towards him by continuing to suggest that the frustrations of the fans are unfounded.
Celtic are allowing high quality players like Jeremie Frimpong to leave the club, the first of many, yet the fans are still unaware about the outcome of the review. This isn’t Neil Lennon’s fault, he is likely not to be in charge next year but there needs to be strong leadership in this situation and strategic planning – signing players for the Champions League qualifiers.
