SANDMAN’S DEFINITIVE RATINGS: CELTIC @ LEGOLAND…

“I would rather have an inferiority complex and be pleasantly surprised, than have a superiority complex and be rudely awakened.” – Vanna Bonta

THE FRIENDLY GHOST – 7/10 MOTM – A returning Danish hero, and heroics were on the cards as he produced a wonder-save to foil a wonder-strike and keep us in the game. For about two minutes. But this wasn’t on Kasper – after producing our best play of the game with that fantastic dive, he remained the only Bhoy in tune; but despite his attempts to rouse his men, they remained Celts in timidity.
KATIE – 4.5/10 – Even the EPL experience of KT wasn’t enough to hold back the tide of diasporic enthusiasm from the home side’s multi-national collective of well-researched quality. After recent resurgence, he struggled with the pace and the interchanges around him. Lasted the 90, but with a grim set and little influence.

TONY THE TIGER – 4/10 – Took one in the face like he was sparring with Rocky, to save a certainty. But it must have rattled him, because soon after, their tricky Basque winger rinsed him twice and killed us stone deid. It left Tony chasing shadows and us chasing a game we totally lost a footing in. Should have melted the wee upstart early on.
OF JUSTICE – 4/10 – For the first half hour, Liam looked settled and focussed. But the real test came in that collapse, and he let it get to him – flustered, losing control of the central spaces as their fluid movement dragged
him around. He failed to make the precise decisions we needed and exert the command he’s shown in big games.

CRUSTY THE CLOWN – 6/10 – On the thirty minute mark, as they were staking hold of the middle, I thought to myself, ‘This is going to be similar to Atalanta,’ and found comfort in knowing the same central defensive pairing were present. I should, of course, have realised it was going to be like Atlantis – we were going to get drowned like ginger kittens with rickets. However, I thought the big man maintained his composure tonight while many heads around him were lost. And on that note, good to see him rocking up to Glasgow Airport wearing a cannibal necklace of fingerbones with Butland’s shrunken heid as centrepiece. Or did I just dream that?

CALMAC – 4/10 – Wherefore art thou, skipper? Well, trying his damnedest but swamped completely after a promising opening spell. There’s only so much he can do – particularly against quality opposition – if he’s going Han Solo, and the lack of support in our midfield meant they simply began to play around him.

THE TERMINATOR – 3/10 – Gone shy again, Arne? Preceding games had shown he’s got the solidity to make himself a force in beside Calmac. But after that first thirty, he went into his shell, dropped the combative edge and got run around dogging like Super up Glennifer Braes. Allegedly.

NEGAN – 2/10 – Presence. He lacks it. Therefore WE lack it when the going gets tough and Calmac and Arne make like General Custer to the same fruitless end, battling overwhelming odds in midfeld. It might be okay to miss five and nail one against SPL jobbers, but at this level they’ve all got to count and once Negan had skied his customary big chance, he disappeared; like the ball into the night sky.

JAMESY – 4.5/10 – Danish chicks? Ten pages of Jamesy’s scrapbook; ‘My Big Book Ay Burds Aroond The World’. But the only pumping going on tonight was us as a collective. And Jamesy didn’t start badly at all – appeared lively and maybe dangerous; certainly made some women move a few rows back up the stands. But after he’d been skinned with Tony for the opener, the malaise had a grip and by half-time Martin’s mind was made up – Jamesy could spend the second 45 chatting up the hospitality blondies: “Lyst til det?”

KENNY JOHNNY – 3/10 – What happened? After channelling Larsson for a week, he became possessed by Tony Cascarino, couldn’t pick a run, and more chance of a fat Zombie sticking to a diet than the ball to JK. Bizarre.

TUTANKHAMUN – 3.5/10 – Like Jamesy, some early promise as he waltzed past their ex-Zombie pseudo-Rasta like he was still wearing slaver-empire blue. But thenTut, too, blanched at the idea of raising his game to match their intensity and… ‘phoof!’, like that, he was gone.

DONNY – 6/10 – Aw, for fu… One of those sickening Euro shambles where the things you don’t see coming just apply the final nuts-kick. After landing our first shot on target and then winning the penalty, the fresh young hope had at least injected some vitality into our forays up the park. Then, as often happens in cursed seasons… He too broke down, emotionally as well as physically, as his traitorous hammy capped the night’s depression.

LORD KATSUMOTO – 5.5/10 – If only.. Daizen had been fully fit to start. Crucial to our successes in Europe, we missed his ubiquitous harassment of dallying defenders. Was able, with Donny, to make them think a bit at the back as he got in about them, picking up a yellow which he just sneered at through his storm-slicked dynamic makeover. Like a Manga-designed end-of-level boss.
SAINT BERNARDO – N/A – Good to see big Paulo getting minutes. Helped set up the penalty. Give him more, Martin. He’s like Thommo…

HAKUNA HATATE – N/A – Reo’s on and nicking penalties off the kids like a Japanese Brian Glover. But at least he buried it. Just.
BALIKMORY – N/A – Amazing. All the way to Denmark concealed in the kit bag. Then ran around a bit.

FATHER MARTIN AND SAMWISE GANGEE – 6/10 – Well, you’re not playing in the Larsson/Sutton era now, boss…He can look bemused at the best of times, can MON, and sometimes it’s a ruse. But his bewilderment was authentic tonight as he watched the confidence he’d rebuilt crumble in an 8-minute spell of calamity. No messing at the break with the changes which did stiffen our resolve a tad, but the war was won and we were done by then. So now comes his latest trial – get them back in the groove for a tricky Sunday must-win. In Martin we trust. Because we need to – there’s no-one else. Yet.
MIBBERY – 4/10 – Had our players casting a few confused glances at some of his calls, but the big ones he and his team got right. And was able to cast his own confused glances back at the flaming implosion in the Hoops’ defending.

OVERALL – 3/10 – A near-slaughter by a well-run club which exemplifies the correct methodology and mechanics at executive level to put the winning product on the park. Our executives might take a long and hard look at what went down last night – our team competed well for half an hour then were overrun by quality we’d never heard of. We’ll hear plenty about it when they sell it on for mega-profits – I’d bid for the No.7 right now.

We were well-beaten by a well-drilled and well put together side of players from all corners of the globe. They practice Moneyball, much like Hearts are attempting. Here, in Denmark, it looks perfected – eyebrow-raising individuals melded as a potent team able to perform at decent levels.
But that took HARD WORK and dedicated graft: long hours and due diligence pouring over hundreds of prospects, sifting through stats, data, looking for the metric that sets them apart, not obvious to the casual observer but a game-changer if exploited properly. It certainly works for them – intensity and press, movement and rotations we just could not handle.

Yet there’s no excuse for us. We’ve a bigger budget and draw than Midtjylland. What we lack – or have recently – is the willingness to go deep and thorough in coaching terms and particularly at board-level. Dick Dastardly might want to take a look at the Danes – that’s proper corporate structure and profitable sporting operations.

Do we have such commitment? On the pitch, yes. At coaching levels, yes; now certainly and hopefully incoming. At executive level? don’t be flaming stupid; they’ve been grifting on reputation. Nights like last night emphasise the immediate lack of consistent performance by the players, sure – we know they can do better – but more so highlights the disparity of quality performance by the executives; and given the standing of the two clubs, that’s pretty shameful, Celtic.
