Rangers v Celtic – Team news, referee details, KO time & where to watch

It’s Sunday and it’s the day that just under 8000 Celtic supporters will reclaim the Free Broomloan at Ibrox and make their presence felt, and that’s clearly a big worry for the Celtic obsessed Ibrox boss Danny Rohl….

Last weekend Celtic didn’t start playing until 1pm and had to recover the damage done in the 12 noon kick-off in the Scottish Premiership. Helpfully the match starts at 1pm today so that clearly suits Celtic, as does the incredible sight of the Broomloan decked in green white and gold and with a backing that can drive Martin O’Neill’s team on to victory and a place in the Scottish Cup semi-finals against Falkirk, Dunfermline and one of Partick Thistle or St Mirren.

Let’s do this today Bhoys!

Celtic Team News

Martin O’Neill has a decision of sorts to make on the goalkeeping front but in truth Viljami Sinisalo has made that an easy call for the manager particularly with that crucial and rather spectacular save from Kevin Harper at Pittodrie on Wednesday night.

Joe Hart pointed out yesterday that Kasper will still have a huge part to play in the business end of the season for Celtic but much of that may be behind the scenes and on the bench. The Denmark boss too is assessing his own options ahead of the upcoming World Cup play-offs and with younger Danish keepers playing in the Premier League for Chelsea and West Ham, Kasper could find himself on the bench for his national team too.

Kieran Tierney took a sore one on the ankle at Pittodrie and missed training on Friday but Martin O’Neill was reasonably upbeat about his chances. He’s likely to be on the bench with Marcelo Saracchi getting the nod.

Dane Murray could miss out with his thigh injury sustained in the warm-up in midweek so Benjamin Arthur will get his second start for Celtic.

The Celtic manager, as Chris Sutton has pointed out, will not make the same team selection errors that allowed the Rangers to storm into a 2-0 half-time lead last weekend and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain is likely to drop to the bench with Reo Hatate starting.

Up top Daizen Maeda caused the Rangers centre-backs all sorts of problems with his movement in the second half last weekend so should get the nod, even after some atrocious finishing from the Japanese forward at Pittodrie.

Sebastian Tounekti is likely to play on the left with the Tunisian international praising Celtic for helping him through ramadan. Energy levels may be an issue for the 90 minutes so that could be a factor in whether Tounekti starts or comes off the bench.

Match Officials

For today’s Scottish Cup quarter-final tie that will be played to a finish, we have Don Robertson with the whistle and Andrew Dallas on VAR.

Makes you wonder how many consecutive weeks we’d have to play them before the Scottish FA have to resort to appointing match officials who aren’t actually supporters of one of the teams involved in the Glasgow Derby match. Are there no match officials from Dundee, Inverness or Aberdeen? Why do we have so many from Lanarkshire?

Andrew Dallas is on VAR

Andrew Dallas is on VAR duties for the League Cup semi-final between Celtic and Aberdeen.

Match referee Don Robertson will be assisted by Ross Macleod and David Roome while Andrew Dallas with be the VAR and he will be assisted by Matthew MacDermid, the match official who sent Auston Trusty off against Hibs.

Kick-off Time

As mentioned above today’s Scottish Cup quarter final between the Rangers and Celtic takes place at Ibrox Stadium and the match kicks off at 1pm*.
