Video: Celtic’s 2003 side “too powerful” for Ange’s Bhoys

As the debate rages on about whether or not this Celtic team could take on the magnificent side of 2003 under Martin O’Neill, a man who played in that side has been having his say on the latest discussion surrounding Hoops sides of past and present. Neil Lennon has been talking to PLZ Soccer and gave his honest opinion to host, Peter Martin.

A key cog in the O’Neill machine that saw us dominate our rivals and reach a UEFA Cup Final against Jose Mourinho’s Porto, Lennon will know full well the abilities of his former teammates and just what they were capable of on their day. We swatted aside some of the biggest names in European football during that era and were consistently on point at Celtic Park in either the UEFA Cup or Champions League group stage.

Lennon has admitted that he feels the team that he played in would be just too powerful for Ange and his side. In fairness, that Celtic side bullied most teams that they came up against year-in-year-out on the domestic and European circuit. Bayern Munich were overjoyed that they managed a draw at Parkhead back in 2003 and that just shows you the quality of our squad back then.

It doesn’t mean to say that we wouldn’t want to watch that one as a spectacle, or indeed that any of the current Celtic players wouldn’t either be in that team or chapping on the door certainly. But this Celtic we are watching just now is still as special as we’ve had in many a year and we look forward to seeing it evolve under Ange Postecoglou moving forward. With a points record still in sight, this current side can exacerbate this argument if they topple previous tallies.

Here’s Neil Lennon giving his take on that debate:

About Author

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
