Gustaf Lagerbielke looks like he’s heading for the exit door as talks take place to secure a move away from Celtic with two clubs in the running to take the Swedish central defender on loan.
Lagerbielke was one on numerous project signing including Marco Tilio, Odin Holm, Hyeokkyu Kwon, Hyunjun Yang and Maik Nawrocki made by the club last summer, with the defender costing Celtic around £3m from Swedish side IF Elfsborg. Like many of these players Lagerbielke signed a five year contract so has four seasons remaining in his deal.
However he’s unlikely to make too many more appearances for Celtic as clearly he is not in Brendan Rodgers’ plans. He did score Celtic’s first winner in a Champions League match for a long time, last December against Feyenoord.
A loan move, perhaps with an option to buy would suit all parties and hopefully a move can be sorted ahead of the window closing. Lagerbielke was scheduled to head to Italy in the January transfer window but Celtic pulled that deal amid injury problems in the defence. It’s hopefully a case of second time lucky for Gustaf as he will want to get back to playing football.
At Celtic he can’t even make the matchday squad.
‘Celtic defender Gustaf Lagerbielke is about to go on loan to SC Heerenveen. Also KV Mechelen shows interest. Nothing has been signed yet, the parties involved are working on a solution. Talks took place yesterday in Glasgow.’ Dominik Schneider reports, signalling that a loan move is now imminent.
