Good luck to Celtic FC Women as they make history tonight by participating in the group stages of the UEFA Women’s Champions League for the first time ever. What an achievement for the club to reach the last 16 of Europe’s premier tournament for women’s football.

Celtic FC Women make history tonight as they take on Dutch champions FC Twente at New Douglas Park in Hamilton in their first ever Champions League group stage game. Indeed they are the first ever Scottish women’s side to take part in Europe’s premier competition.

FC Twente are a quality side

The Dutch Champions may be seen as the ‘lesser’ side compared to our two other rivals in the group Chelsea and Real Madrid, but the FC Twente are a quality side and will prove to be a stern test indeed for Elena Sadiku’s charges. The Dutch are odds on favourites with the bookmakers while you can get 3/1 on a home win for Celtic, but that’s not factoring in the Celtic support’s influence on proceedings. T

The Green Wall is back and as we witnessed previously at Celtic Park in the season before last, the atmosphere that creates is electric and can raise our Celtic Ghirls to new levels. Celtic are fourth seed in this group with  Chelsea one of the favourites to win the competition.

Gap between Celtic FC Women and Chelsea is enormous

It’s fair to say the gap between Celtic and the London club is enormous and Real Madrid aren’t too bad either.  FC Twente at home might be our best chance for three points and the players will sense that too this evening.

Elena Sadiku is a tactically astute coach

Elena Sadiku is a  shrewd coach and she has her players playing some good stuff this season, so they will be well up for the task of taking on FC Twente who are considered by many to be a better side than ourselves. The Dutch girls will know that Celtic away is their best chance of anything on the road and a defeat this evening will seriously damage their chances of going through to the knockout rounds.

Like the men’s side, the home ties will be key to the Celtic FC Women’s chances of progressing in the tournament. However for the Ghirls this season, the target has already been met as far as Europe is concerned with group stage qualification.

Financially Celtic FC Women could make around £500,000

The team will get an understanding of the level required and the gap that ultimately has to be closed. And with around £500,000 in likely revenue from participation this season – a huge amount of money in the women’s game in Scotland – there should be ample funds to progress through quality signings for next season.

With a trip to Spain to take on Real Madrid up next, it’s important we get something on the board this evening.

Elena plays with a back three and two wingbacks who domestically are effectively wingers. Both are mobile enough to get up and down the wing all night.  They also give extra security at the back and the manager will be reminding them of their defensive duties.

Watch Elena Sadiku alongside Celtic captain Kelly Clark speaking to the media at New Douglas Park yesterday ahead of this evening’s UEFA Women’s Champions League opener against Dutch Champions FC Twente.

I don’t see any reason why we can’t get a victory tonight, we have the ability, it’s just about having the belief.  I reckon that there will be just the one goal scored and Irish striker Saoirse Noonan could be the Celtic hero this evening.

So my own scoreline prediction is Celtic FC Women 1 FC Twente 0.

C’mon Ghirls let’s do it!
