Happy 60th Birthday to Paul McStay, a true Celtic legend…
The Man who was dubbed the ‘Maestro’ was one of the first players I idolised when growing up, and it’s no exaggeration to say that he was one of the best ever to pull on those famous green and white hoops.
Faithful Through and Through
Paul was an extremely gifted player and could have quite easily played for any of the top sides in Europe, he was that good. To his credit he stuck with Celtic who were there only team he wanted to play for. He witnessed the good times, winning leagues and cups, and was instrumental in our fairytale centenary year league and cup double win.
Paul McStay’s undisputed talent
He was also there during our darkest days when we went six long years without winning a major honour. It was quite apt that it was Paul who captained us to our Scottish cup success in 1995 which ended that barren run.
It was often claimed, and with some substance it has to be said that Paul could have left the club and had a much more successful career than he did, but he stayed because he was a true Celtic man. For that loyalty, along with his undisputed talent, Paul is quite rightly regarded as one of the best players to have ever played for our club. Many happy returns Paul.
Just an Ordinary Bhoy
All true especially his ability to play for any team, any where, we were truly blessed to have McStay and Collins as our midfield. huns hated McStay and had their media servants questioning his ambition for staying at Celtic but Paul was a Celtic man from a Celtic family. Thanks Paul McStay I was lucky enough to see you in our hoops.
