Motherwell v Celtic: Dramatic scenes on last two visits to Fir Park

Celtic face Motherwell this afternoon in the Scottish Premiership as Brendan Rodgers’ side return to domestic duty after European exploits midweek. The Celts will be keen to return to winning ways after draws against Aberdeen and Atalanta and next up is a tough trip to Fir Park.

Last season, Celtic had to dig deep to get two wins against The Steelmen in two fairly dramatic afternoons in North Lanarkshire.

Motherwell 1 Celtic 3 – 25th February 2024

On Celtic’s most recent trip, Celtic had to come from behind and thanked Adam Idah for his contribution that would prove to be vital at the end of the season.

Blair Spittal struck in the first half to give the hosts the lead after a fantastic piece of skill from Lennon Miller. The midfielders combined to give Stuart Kettlewell’s side the lead at half-time. Kyogo, who spurned a first half chance, was replaced with Adam Idah coming on. Five minutes after the break, Celtic had parity after a fantastic cross from Greg Taylor found the Irishman. Joe Hart had to make a world class save to deny Miller as Celtic threatened.

However, it wasn’t until AListair Johnston fizzed a cross across the face of goal that Idah’s deft touch beat Liam Kelly to give Celtic a deserved lead right at the death. Luis Palma wrapped the scoring up deep into injury time with a tap in.

Motherwell 1 Celtic 2 – 30th September 2023

Celtic were engaged in a fairly even contest last September as both teams tried to get the better of the other without managing to find a breakthrough. Luis Palma struck what he thought was the winner right at the end with a whipped cross.

Moments later, Blair Spittal scored to send the hosts wild as the thought they had secured a point. ‘We Don’t Stop’ was the mantra under Ange and it continued as Celtic took the ball from kick-off and worked it into a good area, which allowed Greg Taylor to fire an inch perfect cross onto the right boot of Matt O’Riley, which sparked incredible scenes behind the goal.
