Former Ibrox winger Vladimir Weiss desperate to face Celtic

Former Ibrox winger Vladimir Weiss is keen to set up another showdown against Celtic following Slovan Bratislava’s 1-0 defeat against Kairat Almaty in Kazakhstan on Wednesday…

The experienced Weiss has also come to the defence of his father after the outburst he had on the sidelines during the Slovakian champions’ surprising defeat in Almaty.

Bratislava’s manager Weiss Sr was sent off during their first-leg loss after a penalty was given to Kairat in the final stages of the Champions League third qualifying round encounter.

Although Bratislava was down to 10 men for the final 25 minutes following Rahim Ibrahim’s dismissal, they seemed on course to secure a crucial 0-0 draw in Asia—until the dying moments when 16 year-old Dastan Satpaev converted a penalty to hand Kairat a surprising victory.

Weiss snr, who managed Kairat for three years between 2012 to 2015, confronted both the referee and the fourth official, then charged onto the field, only to be pulled back which ultimately led to him being given a straight red.

His son, who was loaned to the Ibrox club during the 2010/2011 season remains Bratislava’s skipper at 35 years old.

Weiss jnr insists he is determined to have another shot at facing Celtic in the Champions League playoff while defending his father’s actions.

Speaking via Glasgow Times, he said: “He’s a very emotional man and this match meant even more to him because he used to manage Kairat Almaty. Just as I would do anything for this team, so would he. He regrets what happened now, but there’s nothing he can do about it now.

“Unfortunately, we will miss him in the home leg, but with the quality on our side and with our excellent fans, we will beat them at a sold-out stadium and win through to play against Celtic.”

The winners of next week’s second leg between Bratislava and Kairat will face Celtic in the Champions League playoff later this month.

The Hoops will play the first leg at Celtic Park on Wednesday 20 August with an 8:00pm kick-off scheduled. The return leg whether that be in Slovakia or Kazakhstan will the kick-off time probably being dependent on the opponent.

Celtic will participate in the group stages of European competition this season; if Brendan Rodgers’ side don’t progress to Europe’s elite club competition, they will enter the Europa League (slow lane) instead.
