Photo Of The Day: Chalmers Scores At Aberdeen

Today’s photo of the day focuses on a match between Celtic and Aberdeen at Pittodrie, much like this weekend’s forthcoming fixture. However, the game depicted in this image took place in January 1961.

Celtic lined up with Haffey; Mackay, McNeill, Crerand, Kennedy; Peacock, Gallacher, Auld, Hughes; Divers, Chalmers. A complete star studded line up, with almost every player a household Celtic name. It is hard to believe that team conspired to finish 4th behind Rangers, Kilmarnock and Third Lanark.

Nevertheless, 14 January 1961 was a positive afternoon for the Hoops. Celtic took the lead through  Charlie Gallacher on 37 minutes, then Stevie Chalmers made it 2-0 just shy of half time. His goal came from a header and the image shows the ball finding its way to the back of the net as Aberdeen defender, Bennet, looks on helplessly.

Aberdeen hit back through Brownlie, before a late Divers goal sealed the points with a 3-1 victory.

22,000 fans had braved the frost to watch the match and they went home entertained.
