Five memorable Celtic moments, with a nod to the late Celtic Historian and Celtic Star legend David Potter, on this day starting in 1913…

Willie Maley and Peter Johnstone
ONE – SATURDAY 8 MARCH 1913 – 1913 is not a great year for Celtic in spite of it being the Silver Jubilee of their first game in 1888. Today in front of a huge crowd of 66,000 at Celtic Park, they go out of the Scottish Cup to Hearts by the only goal of the game. As Celtic are struggling in the League as well, it seems obvious that some new players are required, but Willie Maley is aware of this.

TW0 – SATURDAY 8 MARCH 1919 – Because of their situation on the Clyde, Morton have had a good war with plenty of players available and willing to turn out after their shift in the shipyard. An excellent example of this is Stan Seymour who would play such a huge part in Newcastle United’s development after the war. Today Morton are good enough to hold Celtic to a 0-0 draw.

Joe Carruth scored
THREE – WEDNESDAY 8 MARCH 1939 – The Celtic support, dispirited after their defeat by Motherwell in the Scottish Cup on Saturday make their way to Cathkin this afternoon in commendably high numbers and see their team beat Third Lanark 2-0 with goals from Willie Lyon and Joe Carruth.

Billy McNeill scored
FOUR – WEDNESDAY 8 MARCH 1967 – This is one of Parkhead’s greatest ever European nights, as Celtic, 0-1 down in the first leg against Vojvodina, level the tie with a Stevie Chalmers goal, then with a play-off in neutral Rotterdam looming, Billy McNeill heads home a Charlie Gallagher corner to win the game in the final minute. 75,000 see a game they will remember the rest of their lives.

John Hartson scored
FIVE – SATURDAY 8 MARCH 2003 – As Celtic approach the vital part of the season and war is threatening in the Middle East, Rangers appear at Parkhead, but are defeated 1-0 with the only goal of the game scored by John Hartson. Opinions vary about Hartson. Some think he lacks pace, but he can certainly take a goal.
