UEFA have announced two rule changes for the 2026-27 Champions League, Europa League and Conference League, with both forming part of the updated regulations for the competition Celtic enter as they face LASK of Austria in the play-off round. The first change raises the yellow card threshold for a one-match ban. Previously, three bookings triggered an automatic suspension; in the 2026-27 competition, a player will need to accumulate four yellow cards before sitting out. That is a meaningful shift in the rules for any club involved in European competition this season.
The second change removes UEFA’s long-standing rule that prevented stadium clocks from advancing beyond 45 and 90 minutes. The clock will now run on continuously into added time, mirroring what Premier League grounds have done for the past two years. It is a straightforward operational alignment with domestic practice, but it closes the visual disconnect supporters have experienced when following European nights.
Celtic are the only British club in the Champions League play-off round, and will face LASK of Austria in their bid to reach the league phase. The financial rewards attached to reaching the league phase are substantial.
