Genk are weighing two midfield targets, and reports that Benjamin Tahirovic is ahead of Niko Sigur on the club’s list could affect the pursuit of the Hajduk Split player.
Genk are looking to add a new number six alongside Bryan Heynen after an inconsistent start to the season. According to Voetbalnieuws, the Belgian club have made a reported €4 million bid for Hajduk Split midfielder Niko Sigur.
Sigur, 22, was part of Canada’s World Cup squad this summer. He has also been linked with Celtic, making Genk’s next move one to watch in the wider picture around the midfielder.
Genk have two options in midfield
Genk have also made a reported approach for Benjamin Tahirovic of Brøndby, with Danish media and Het Nieuwsblad said to have confirmed the bid. Reports have suggested that the eventual fee could rise to €4 million.
Further reporting says Tahirovic is Genk’s priority ahead of Sigur, with negotiations with Brøndby ongoing. Genk are reportedly considering an initial season-long loan with an option to buy, while a four-year contract could be available if that option is taken up.
Tahirovic missed Brøndby training on Thursday, according to the reports. The 23-year-old made his professional debut under José Mourinho at Roma and played 13 times in his first season. Ajax then paid €7.5 million for him before he moved to Brøndby around 18 months later for €1.25 million.
At international level, Tahirovic has won 32 caps for Bosnia. He played in all four of Bosnia’s World Cup matches this summer before losing his starting place during the tournament.
What it could mean for Celtic
If Genk complete a deal for Tahirovic, their interest in Sigur may become less immediate. That remains an inference rather than a confirmed outcome, but it would leave the situation around Sigur open as Celtic continue to be linked with the Hajduk midfielder.
