CCV hoping Champions League exposure can lead to World Cup dream

Cameron Carter-Vickers is hoping that with exposure to the Champions League next season, he can realise his dream of playing at a World Cup with the USA. The big defender has just put pen to paper in the past few days, sealing his immediate future with the Scottish Champions for at least the next four years.

Now he will be looking to test himself against the best European football has to offer, given that Celtic have gained automatic entry to the group stages of the Champions League next term. In what will surely be a first for most of the squad, Cameron hopes performing to a high level in Europe will lead to a World Cup spot with his international side.

As reported by Football Scotland, CCV said: “It’s hopeful when you know the manager trusts you and he believes in you. Me and the rest of the players also believe in him. We believe he will take us and lead us in the right way. That was important last year and will be this season again.

“As a team, we want to build on what we did last season. Obviously, it was great to win the league last term and that is something we want to do again next year. And we want to test ourselves in Europe, in the Champions League we’ll be playing against some great teams and great players, so to see how we measure up will be great.

“The Champions League will be great to play in, that’s the best competition in club football, so to be involved in that will be great. And talking about the World Cup, that’s something I’m trying to work towards to be in the squad, and make sure I’m there with the USA.”

Cameron will not be alone in this respect, as many of our current crop of players will be itching to test themselves over six matches against the elite teams that could lie in wait in 2022-23. After sampling the delights of Celtic Park on a Europa League night, the step up to the big boys will knock their socks off when it comes to atmosphere. It promises to be electric.

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.

  1. Never noticed how tall O’Riley is until now; he’s got a couple of inches on CCV, though that photo makes him look a lot taller!

Both cracking players with a lot to offer, and still improving!
