Celtic could be in line for a bumper windfall, after it has emerged that FC Barcelona are monitoring Jeremie Frimpong with a view to making a bid for the Dutchman. Frimpong currently plies his trade with Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga after he moved from Parkhead in the winter transfer window of 2021 for around £11 million.
The pacey right-back was brought to Scotland from Man City as the Hoops exploited the strong connection and ties we have with the English club back in the summer of 2019. Jeremie arrived that pre-season along with the now ex-communicated Chris Jullien, Hatem El Hamed, Boli Bolingoli, Moi Elyonoussi and Fraser Forster. All helped secure our ninth title on the bounce as we equalled our previous record.
Now it has been reported that the diminutive defender could be on his way to the Spotify Camp Nou as the Catalonian’s look to add to their already extensive summer recruitment drive. He is apparently on a five-man shortlist as they look to provide competition for Ronald Araujo.
According to Spanish transfer guru Gerardo Moreno, Frimpong is on a list with Juan Foyth, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Thomas Meunier and Diogo Dalot as potential candidates for the right-back berth. It would mean a significant return from Frimpong’s sale as the Germans would be looking for a significant amount more than they paid Celtic for him.
With a percentage of any future profit included within the deal that took Jeremie to Germany, it looks like the Scottish Champions could be in the money again this summer, as Man City hold an interest in Kieran Tierney too. We’ll All be watching events closely as they unfold, that much is certain.
