“He drives standards about the place,” Broony praises Calmac

Scott Brown has lavished the highest of praise on understudy and his now successive Celtic captain, Callum McGregor. The pair worked together for several years at Lennoxtown and Brown holds the currently injured Celtic skipper in the highest of regard. Both men were influential in helping deliver a quadruple treble under Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon.

Brown, now manager of English League One side, Fleetwood Town, said: “I tried to drive everything as much as I could when I knew I was coming to the end, but I was glad when I was leaving they offered Cal the captaincy because he drives training. He drives standards about the place and wants to be the best he possibly can be. Did I play with better players? Possibly. I played with Virgil (van Dijk) and (Victor) Wanyama and stuff, but controlling a dressing room is hard.

The former club captain obviously has a great rapore with Callum and thinks the world of both his footballing ability and personality. The ex-Hibee had the pleasure and privilege of playing with some really talented individuals as evidenced with his referral to Virgil Van Djik and Victor Wanyama. However, it speaks volumes for McGregor that his former teammate would hold him in the most esteemed of company in Celtic’s modern history.

Moreover, Brown joked that he would like both Callum and James Forrest to come down and help him at Fleetwood with training, saying: “For standards and tempo in training, I would say Callum McGregor. I would take him or Jamesey (Forrest), all day long. He added jokingly, “If any of them want to come then it’s an option, lads; A year’s loan.” With James still going strong after smashing the 100 goal barrier for the Hoops and on course to do the same with assists, it stands to reason that anyone would want him and Callum in their pool of players.

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
