Bayern Munich lead Frimpong chase and £25m price-tag is good news for Celtic

Jeremie Frimpong was a well-liked player amongst the Celtic support, with an infectious personality off the field, he played the game with a smile on his face on it. And in terms of the modern day attacking full back, his attacking qualities and endeavour were always going to mean Frimong’s talents attracted attention.

So, it proved when Celtic, who paid £350,000 for the players services from Manchester City, received an offer they couldn’t refuse for Frimpong and it was off to the Bundesliga and Bayer Leverkusen for Jeremie for a fee on £13m.

Even with a sell on clause due to City, Celtic were certainly quid’s in on that deal, and hopefully they will be again, as Frimpong is once again attracting admiring glances, this time from German giants Bayern Munich, according to a report from German media outlet Sport1.

This time around the reported fee is £25m for Frimpong, who has performed well this season, grabbing a couple of goals as well as eight assists from his 31 appearances – and it appears Bayern Munich also have company when it comes to their admiration of the former Celtic full back, as both Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona are also credited with an interest.

Frimpong, who of course returned to Celtic Park this year as Leverkusen defeated the Hoops 4-0 in the Europa League, it appears is something of a hot property. And from a Celtic perspective, as much as we like to see former players do well, we also like to ensure sell on clauses are inserted when transfer terms are agreed. Let’s hope Celtic did the same with this one as they did with the likes of Kieran Tierney. If so, it could be a healthy addition to Ange Postecoglou’s budget come the summer transfer window.

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.
