Celtic sign Patsy Gallacher’s great granddaughter Amy

Celtic FC Women have a Scottish Cup Final against Glasgow City at Tynecastle on Sunday taking up most of Fran Alonso’s attention, but plans for next season also appear to be well under way, with the club announcing signing of former Hibs attacker Amy Gallacher for the start of the 22/23 season.

Amy started out her career with Forfar Farmington before moving to Hibs in 2017 and has both League Cup and Scottish Cup winning experience under her belt whilst with the Edinburgh side, something she’ll no doubt be looking to continue at Celtic.

And trophy winning experience runs deep in Amy’s family with Great-Grandfather and Celtic legend Patsy winning six league titles, four Scottish Cups and four Glasgow Cups, in the Hoops. Indeed, Amy signed her contract with Celtic yesterday with her Great Grandfather’s medals sitting in the trophy cabinet behind her. A nice touch by the club that one.

And Amy, speaking to Celtic TV has admitted signing on with the club has made for a happy occasion for the whole family, particularly given the family history with Celtic going back nearly a century.

“I’m very happy to be here, obviously it’s a massive club and a successful one, so I’m happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started. Following my great-granddad makes the moment a bit more special. It’s a special moment for me and for my family.

‘Obviously, he’s a Celtic legend, so I’m not sure if I’ll live up to that but it’s a special moment. Like him, I want to be successful here and continue to develop myself and win trophies.”

And Amy is looking forward to writing some further chapters in the Gallacher family Celtic history, by aiming high with Celtic, and admits after chatting with Fran Alonso the former Hibs player is in a good place when it comes to a style of play that suits her attacking strengths, as well as hopefully a further opportunity to experience European football again having already scored for Hibs in the Champions League.

“It was a no brainer to sign here. I spoke to the manager a few times and I love the style of play and I think I will fit in really well here. I’m an attacking player and I like to create things, so hopefully I can bring goals and assists and just add things on the pitch.

“I want to qualify for the Champions League and win titles and hopefully that’s something I can do over the coming years. Champions League nights with the men’s team at Celtic Park is massive so hopefully we can qualify here and bring it again.”

To experience Champions League football again, Celtic will have to improve on a third place SWPL1 finish this season, but it certainly appears Fran Alonso is making plans in the shape of Amy Gallacher to ensure creative options within the squad are increased for the next campaign.

And while focus may well be on the Scottish Cup Final with Glasgow City this weekend, Fran Alonso’s thoughts are clearly also moving towards an improved showing when next season’s league campaign kicks off – and it looks like Amy Gallacher will be playing a big part in those plans.

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.
