Celtic have rejected an approach from Dundee for centre-back Dane Murray, with the 23-year-old now expected to remain at the club for the remainder of the season. The move was reported by Dundee FC writer George Cran, with Celtic making clear they have no intention of letting Murray leave on loan.
According to The Courier, Dundee’s enquiries were firmly rebuffed. Murray had been on the bench for Monday’s 1-0 win over the Dark Blues at Parkhead – a fact that tells its own story about where he sits in O’Neill’s thinking right now.
Dundee’s need is understandable. They lost Luke Graham and Billy Koumetio over the summer and have been seeking reinforcements at centre-back as a result. From their perspective, it made perfect sense to ask.
From Celtic’s perspective, it makes equally clear sense to say no. O’Neill has been open about Murray’s situation, acknowledging that the defender is effectively two years behind in his development due to injury, while maintaining that he has genuine potential. Keeping him in and around the first-team environment, rather than shipping him out to a rival, reflects that long-term view.
There is also a practical dimension. Murray carries club-trained status for UEFA squad registrations, which has real value in a season involving European football. With Liam Scales serving a suspension at the start of the campaign and Cameron Carter-Vickers working his way back from a serious injury, Celtic’s centre-back options have been stretched, making Murray’s presence in the squad all the more important.
The debate over whether Murray would benefit more from regular starts elsewhere is a fair one. A player who has barely featured due to injury needs minutes, not a watching brief. O’Neill himself has noted that Murray is two years behind in his development, and another season on the bench will not help him close that gap. Celtic, however, are clearly making deliberate calls on who needs game time elsewhere and who needs to stay close to the first team – and Murray, for now, falls into the latter category.
