Injuries and Covid combine as Celtic FC Women v St Johnstone Cup-tie is cancelled

Celtic FC Women’s SWPL Cup match against St Johnstone scheduled for Sunday at Penny Cars Stadium in Airdrie has been cancelled. Cynic Women has a few moments ago updated on the news that the Group Stages cup match has been CANCELLED and that Celtic will be awarded a 3-0 win.

The Saints apparently are unable to play due to a combination of Covid and injuries. This is far from ideal for Fran Alonso who would have liked the chance to play the game and get the team fully focused for the beginning of the league campaign the following week against Aberdeen. After two gruelling Champions League matches against Levante and FC Minsk, Celtic’s Spanish would also have been looking to get back to winning ways via the result after 90 minutes, not through an opponent being unable to fulfil the fixture.

Well done to St Johnstone for being honest and upfront about their Covid and injury woes…

Here’s the statement issued by Scottish Women’s Football (SWF)…

Scottish Women’s Football (SWF) and the Perform and Win Committee, commonly referred to as the League Management Committee (LMC), have been informed by St Johnstone that they will be unable to fulfil their match against Celtic FC on Sunday 29th August in the Group Stage of the SWPL Cup.

St Johnstone are unable to fulfil the fixture due to a number of injuries and one player testing positive for COVID-19.

While the Perform and Win Committee were sympathetic to St Johnstone’s situation, injuries within a squad are not suitable for postponement requests. With only one player unavailable due to COVID-19, this does not meet the relevant criteria for a game to be postponed.

The Perform and Win Committee have therefore awarded the tie to Celtic FC and it will be marked as a 3-0 win.
