Jim Craig – It was outside-left John Hughes who made the difference

One year after losing to Rangers in the final of the league Cup in 1964, Celtic ran out at Hampden on this day a year later for the League Cup final of 1965, when the Light Blues were once again the opponents.

107,609 were in the stadium for the clash, with Ronnie Simpson between the sticks for only the 5th time in his Celtic career. Bobby Murdoch was one of the driving forces in midfield that afternoon, with Charlie Gallagher alongside him in his first League Cup Final.

Centre-forward Joe McBride was in the midst of a good run, with 7 goals in the competition thus far but, on the day, it was outside-left John Hughes who made the difference, scoring from two penalties, the first in 18 minutes and the second in the 28th minute.

An own goal from Ian Young was Rangers’ only reply, so Celtic won 2-1, only the club’s third 3rd success in the competition in the 20 years of its existence.

Many Happy Returns to Andy Paton, born on this day at Burnley in 1967.

Jim Craig

EAT, SLEEP, DRIBBLE CELTIC

LISBON LION Jim Craig writes his wonderful Celtic Diary every morning on The Celtic Star. There may be other attributes that sets this Celtic site apart from others but it is unarguable that having a Lisbon Lion writing for us is pretty unique and we think is rather special.

We are now looking to have Jim’s diary sponsored – with ALL the money going to Jim. If you run your own business or are have a marketing role in your company and would like to discuss this further please email editor@thecelticstar.co.uk and we’ll get back to you. We have some great ideas on how this low cost opportunity would give your business some amazing exposure – since launching in February this year The Celtic Star achieved by 17 October an incredible 789,744 users according to Google Analytics. And Jim will also be able to assist at one or two events for you – maybe a few lunch dates with key clients etc? Interested? We’d love to hear from you…
