Jim Craig – Yogi’s final appearance for Celtic

Season 1971-72 started, as they always did in those days, with the sectional matches of the League Cup, where teams were brought together in groups of four. In that season, Celtic were drawn alongside Rangers, Morton and Ayr United; and at the end of the 6 matches, they led the group with 10 points, with Rangers on 8, Morton on 5 and Ayr with a single point.

In the three league matches which came up next, Celtic were equally successful, winning all three against Clyde, Rangers and Morton while scoring 15 in the process.

On this day in 1971, the Hoops travelled to Broomfield to face Airdrie in a league match and the team was Williams, Craig, Brogan, Hay, McNeill, Connelly, Wallace, Lennox, Dalglish, Callaghan and Macari. To be honest, the match turned out to be a very one-sided affair, Celtic winning 5-0, the goals coming from Lou Macari (3), Bobby Lennox and Kenny Dalglish.

Halfway through the second half, I got a knock on the side of the knee and it ended up as a ‘dead leg’ where I lost all feeling. I was brought off and the replacement was John Hughes. It turned out to be Yogi’s final appearance in the Celtic strip. On 19 October 1971, he was transferred to Crystal Palace along with fellow Lisbon Lion Willie Wallace.

Many Happy Returns to Dariusz Wdowczyk, born on this day in 1962.
